The World

I have been indulging in worldbuilding since an early age – one of my early maps sparked the inspiration for the first of the constructed languages I later labored over. Recently (2022) I decided my current languages needed a home, one built of more than loose impressionistic brushstrokes, and I began at the bones;

I made a map.

Fair Warning: Everything about this project is subject to change; nothing is set in stone, few lines have been inked over, no canon has been canonized. I am a bundle of flights of fancy. You can’t tie me down. Don’t expect me not to tinker.

I started by sketching out some continents, keeping in mind the notions I already had about where various language groups are situated in the world and some vague ideas of tectonic movements and the resulting topography. I left plenty of room on this planet for more language families than I have already dabbled in. It is about earth sized, and it is earth-like in the majority of qualities, aside from the actual shape of the landmasses. There is an in-world explanation for why it is so earth-like, but I’ll save that for some time when I am feeling narrative-istic. The IRL reason is that I wanted the habitat to support inhabitants that would have the same speech apparatus as I have, i.e. humans. This whole thing was built to house my languages (and their speakers), after all.

A simple continental outline mapped onto a spinning globe.
Ain’t she a beauty?!

And, in case the gif makes you dizzy or refuses to do its lil gif-thing, here is a flat map:

A flat world map in tan and blue.
This is an equirectangular map, so the top and bottom are pretty stretched out!

So far, I am very pleased with this map, and excited to flesh it out further. Up next: freshwater and climates.

In the mean time, a bit of a link to the languages.

a map of a continent with colored zones labeled Bosa, Meoka, and Safalu.

This continent has the three languages I have been working on the most over the last several years.

I haven’t yet taken a moment to figure out all these peoples’ endonyms and exonyms yet, so I just call the people by the names of their languages in the mean time.

Bosa Language /// Bosa Culture

Meoka Language /// Meoka Culture

Safal/Sfalu Laanguage /// Safal/Sfalu Culture
